Blood
in the
Walls

By Stephen Turner

It seems like an ordinary abandoned house at first glance. Worn down wallpaper. Dusty hardwood floors. Windows cracked from years of sun and wind. The same wreck you’d find anywhere else.

It sits all by itself, a few miles off from an abandoned back road. No one knows where it came from. Even if you scour the town’s records all the way to their deepest depths, you won’t find a shred about who built the house.

One day a group of teenagers ventured inside, thinking it was fair game for drinking and partying. They thought it was a good night to relax, unwind, and refresh. One of them was even thinking of confessing love to a childhood friend.

Only one of them left that house alive. He was hysterical when the authorities found him. When they tried to ask him what happened to his friends, all he could tell them was the most unbelievable things imaginable.

Hardwood floors giving way to soft, pink tissue. Windows being glossed over with thick membranes. Walls dripping with blood and teeth jutting out from the floor.

No one believed a word of it, and everyone would have dismissed him completely had it not been for his friends, who couldn’t be found anywhere. The police returned to that house the next day, and were shocked by what they saw.

The house looked brand new. Fully repainted. Every window shiny and stainless. A freshly mowed lawn. Not a bit of wear and tear in the entire house. The teenagers were right after all. That was a good night to refresh.
